Welcome

Group support Ferhat

Welcome to the Bloxham Group of Amnesty International. We are ordinary people standing up for humanity and human rights. Our purpose is to protect individuals wherever justice, fairness and truth are denied.

Sending a card with a simple, personal greeting is a powerful way to show support for someone facing human rights abuse.
Every card matters. For prisoners of conscience, for families whose relatives have disappeared, for people in danger for defending human rights, the cards bring comfort and hope; they offer encouragement and support, and raise spirits. Above all they are a sign that people care.

The cards can also make an impression on police officers, prison staff and political authorities - and that can help to improve the way they treat individuals at risk.

It is simple to take part.  Just follow the advice given with each case and you can be sure that your message of warmth, care and support will make a real difference.

Use your freedom of expression to stand up for the freedom of others - and encourage friends and family to do the same.

Many thanks to those who came along to our Prisoners' Greetings Card Signing event on Saturday in Bloxham. Over 150 cards with messages of support and encouragement were generated, to be sent to prisoners and human rights activists around the world, which is a record. Casual observation suggested a roughly equivalent number of mince pies were eaten also!

Monthly Activities

Our main ongoing work continues to be conducted through our monthly meetings, now held on the third Tuesday of each month (with the exception of August when there is no meeting) and held at High House, High St, Bloxham (more or less opposite the Red Lion pub), thanks to the kind hospitality of Alan Donaldson.

At these meetings we deal with our ongoing actions for the groups 'adopted individual' Ferhat Gercek various action items sent to us in the monthly pack for groups from Amnesty HQ. These typically include requests to write to foreign governments in connection with Amnesty campaigns or to enlist the support of our MP (we have a very constructive relationship with Tony Baldry, a strong human rights supporter himself) or UK Ministers in particular cases. We also discuss and plan our awareness and fund-raising events and endeavour to write at least one letter each a month about the “Real Lives” -  individual human rights cases that are published in the Amnesty Magazine.

Our Activities in 2010

ConcertThe Group raised some £600 during 2010 from events and subscriptions, and this was all despatched to Head Office to support Amnesty's campaigning and research work.
